Acting Up by Melissa Nathan

Jasmin Field is a journalist who lands the role of Elizabeth Bennet in a one-off fundraising adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice”. When she finds out that the play’s director is Harry Noble a well known Hollywood heart-throb with a very large ego, she is pleased to discover that he is every bit as arrogant and obnoxious as she could have wished as this means a lot of material for her column. Things start to go wrong for Jasmin, her best friend dumps her for a man, her family starts to crumble before her eyes and her award-winning column hits bad times. Even more worrying for her is the fact that Harry Noble keeps staring at her.
I found this book very entertaining and enjoyable .It was full of twists. Jasmin is a very entertaining character, who takes on the lead in a play even though she isn’t an actress. It’s a very funny and exciting read which at times can be emotional. I found the book easy to get into, a perfect read for the beach. I would recommend this book and will definitely try more of the author’s previous books. The end was a little predictable but still good all the same.

Blue rage,Black redemption by Stanley ‘Tookie’ Williams

Biography No Comments

Stanley Tookie Williams and a friend formed the Crips, but what they originally set up as protection became worse than the original gangs. The Crips would have deadly street fights with their rival gangs. The Crips soon became well known and feared across L.A .
Soon Tookie was regularly under police surveillance, and was often arrested and released. But in 1981, Tookie was convicted of murdering four people and was sent to death row at San Quentin in Marin County, California.

Tookie always said that he was innocent of the murders .His final plea for clemency was turned down by Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and he was executed by lethal injection on 13th December 2005.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I really could not put this one down. Tookie really did try to change his life around and did so much to try and change the lives of others through his work. I do not believe he should have been executed and was saddened by his death but that’s just my opinion, you must read the book then you will form an opinion of your own. An outstanding book that I will never forget. I didn’t want the book to end as I was so into it.

Maeve Binchy

Maeve Binchy was born in Dublin she first found fame first as London Correspondent for the Irish Times. Her first book, Light A Penny Candle (1982) was popular both in the UK and USA. She lives in Dublin with her husband, Gordon Snell.
A lot of her novels are set in Ireland and deal with the tensions between rural and urban life, and the contrasts between England and Ireland, showing the big changes in Ireland between World War II and today.

She says of her upbringing. ‘My memory of my home was that it was very happy, and that there was more fun and life there than there was anywhere else. My mother could do all kinds of things, like take a bone out of your throat if it got stuck and you were choking, or clean out a turkey on Christmas Eve when it arrived far from oven-ready. She could take out splinters and cure headaches and get the grocer to deliver her a packet of Gold Flake by giving a list of other items as well and asking if it could be brought up to the house soon because she was in a hurry for the cornflour. Our house was ten miles from Dublin City where we all went to University and then to work. Ten miles is near enough to live at home, and just a little too near to get a flat unless there was some bad feeling. And there was no bad feeling.’
